The standard version does a great job on a lot of stuff. I've done a few building exterior and movie set scans with it before, but mostly I do human capture ( https://vimeo.com/m/83652292 ) . The resulting models can always be decimated down to a small enough resolution so that Element 3D can handle it in After Effects too.

You could do most of that with the standard version. You lose some of the functionality to geolocate the data etc but if all you want is a good quality 3d model of the site, the standard version works well. I used it on a smaller scale here (30 secs in) and was only wanting proxy geometry but was very pleasantly surprised by how high quality the results were:

Reading this article, the archaeologist mentions using drones to take pictures that are then stitched together using a "powerful Russian computer" from which ultimately 3D data is extracted.

(It's the NYTimes pay wall so the link might not work)

It turns out it is Photoscan Pro they use. Does anyone know of anything that does something similar NOT for $3500 ?

While this is not an AE related question, I plan on incorporating AE in the work that this could generate and I know that the people on this list are the best to answer this question.

Thanks
