this is a known issue with illustrator files. you do need to make sure there is only one artboard before importing to AE.

this could surprise you for instance when you create a new template of 720HDV in illustrator, you will get 2 art boards by default

so you should delete the bigger one when importing to AE.

it could seem to work fine until you choose the command "create shapesfrom vector layer"

Somehow I added a second artboard to my Illustrator file-- and multiple artboards is a bad thing, at least as far as AE is concerned. Deleted the second artboard, saved, and everything came back as it should.

Whew.
