A bit of a warning about using FFmpeg if you dont want colorshifs.
I have found if i use any intermediate codec in YUV colorspace that the colors will shift slightly when read by FFmpeg. Doing an RGB encoded intermediate file i dont see any noticeable colorshift. But that normally means uncompressed, and very large files, for FFmpeg to be able to read it.

But i too have noticed the mushed out details in the MainConcept encoder in AME that the article talks about. Hopefully Adobe is pressing MainConcept to do something about it in the encoder since i would believe they are a big customer of theirs... :-)

I should check out that x264pro plugin soon, the best of both worlds: Adobe handling the reading of the file and showing correct colors, and x264 encode for best quality... and all within AME :-)

Hmmm, I believe it.  There is room for vast differences in encoder software quality.  I assume the Adobe one was written in-house.

x264, part of FFmpeg, is generally recognized as the best H.264 encoder.  You could output your video from Premiere to an intermediate format an then play with settings in FFmpeg.  You'll have to learn a little command-line mojo, you'll have access to every possible setting.  Or if you want a GUI, you can use VLC and others.

If you want to do it all within Premiere/AME, there's this: http://www.x264pro.com/
