This author seems to think that Premiere is only capable of working with / exporting through AME which is obviously not the case. If you don't like how AME encodes h264 video, don't use it. There are a wealth of other options. Just export lossless 10bit from PP and go to AVID DNxHD, x264 or Prores. Personally I'm fine with the h264 quality from AME for most projects, as anything I'm encoding to h264 is going to be small file sizes, client previews or recompressed for web anyway

Wikipedia says, "x264 is a free software library for encoding video streams into the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format."

What is this voodoo about paying $299?

If you want to do it all within Premiere/AME, there's this: http://www.x264pro.com/
