I'm on PC, and I've got AE set to have all of my caches on my D: Drive. I find under the C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common folder.. a Media Cache Files folder.. which contains .cfa files of tons of large assets I've used in projects over the past few months. Gigs and gigs of files.. Even though I set the caches in the "Conformed Media Cache" settings to go one place, and I've got "Enable Disk Cache" turned off... The banding issue can be a problem. But especially converting 10 bit videos  to hap seems to give me unexpected artifacts at times.
