I’ve seen issues like you describe quite a bit, although it’s been a while now. When it’s happened to me, it’s taken down the whole system. I was usually able to restart, but have had to do a few system rebuilds. I’ve been in 2015 since the release, and don’t think it has happened since I’ve switched. I’m on a 2014 MBP with an nVidia GeForce GT 750M.
I haven’t figured out what’s causing it, but my 2010 iMac hasn’t had any issues with it. I have been operating under the assumption it’s something with the hardware, but have never been able to troubleshoot very well because it never seems to happen doing the same thing outside of CMD-Tabbing.

When AE crashes, it’s always the same cause - I’ve switched to a different app, then I switch back to AE. For example - if I check emails, switch to safari, or deadline monitor etc, then when I switch back to AE the app quits. It also happens a lot when I drag files from the finder into the After Effects project window. The error messages given are generally the same - something about blitpipes, or error making new context.
I haven’t had ongoing stability problems before so it’s perplexing. Has anyone else had this sort of problem?
The only thing I suspect is the video card, this is the first machine I’ve worked on with an ATI card and not nVidia. It has 1gb VRAM, AE is set to use 512meg. I’ve tried making it more or less but doesn’t seem the affect the crashing. Hardware acceleration of panels is turned off. (My machine is an old 2009 MacPro with 32 gig ram, ATI radeon 5770).
Any suggestions?
