There are some older videos out there that give a little insight into how other studios have done it. Specifically, there’s a talk given by a guy who rigged up Angry Birds in After Effects, and while that level of production (i.e. full-time programmers) isn’t an option for everyone, it’s still interesting to watch.
And WAY back in 2010 this Red Giant TV episode on Tiny Inventions caught everyone’s attention, because I don’t think many people had seen these sorts of character animation rigs in AE before.
