I would highly recommend the ObviousFX Erodilation plug-in ($9.95). It’s the minimax that should be in After Effects (it can do sub-pixel erode/dilate). Once you use it you won’t be able to think of using Minimax without grimacing…
One tip - use it in combination with your favorite blur and matte-choke effects and you can finesse edges with a lot of flexibility.
