You can see it by having some lines in an illustrator file that is near but not exactly horisontal or vertical. Converting the illustrator to an AE shape layer and you will get much smoother antialiasing, but ofcourse that is not always possible if the illstrator file is a bit more complex and uses gradients or some of the newer functions of illustrator. Shape layers if set to a 3d also have some issues with shimmering with small slow movement, and here the solution is either as you suggest, force it to be a raster layer by precomping it without using continious rasterize on that precomp, or if you need to keep the shape layer in the 3d comp, use the CC Force Motion Blur effect with a very high Shutter Angle so the shimmering will be smoothed out.
