Hey Eric,

Assuming of course that you are using AE - you should see in the list of filters a group labeled BCC Key and Matte and in this grouping you should find all of the Continuum filters that generate or work with alpha channels. One of these filters is labeled BCC Primatte Studio. 

If you don't see the category as described above, you should then check to ensure that the filter installer was set to place them into the Adobe "Common" folder for the version of AE that you are running. You could always re-run the installer just to be sure that the product installed correctly - it won't harm anything or install duplicates if you were to do that.

I have often contemplated writing an article that looks at how different keying plugins work, there are a few basic approaches.  Keylight is my go-to plugin because it comes with AE, however the last time I had to do keying I was very surprised to discover that I got better results with the old AE 8-bit “Color Range” keyer than with Keylight.  Go figure… I will experiment more with this in the future.  I find Keylight crashes constantly with AE 2017, which is why I have been trying alternatives.

Primatte works in a totally different way to Keylight, so they are likely to give different results with different footage.  Keylight is a difference keyer, and works by looking at the difference between the Red, Green & Blue channels.  A more advanced version of putting a green solid on top of your footage and choosing the difference blending mode.  This is why it only really works with green or blue screens.

Primatte is an advanced linear keyer, although I recall their marketing using the term 3D keyer (maybe I’m remembering incorrectly).  Basically, imagine an RGB value plotted on a graph as an X,Y,Z co-ordinate.  Every colour will have a different position in a cube where the axis are represented by R,G,B values.  Primatte compares the position of each pixel with the position of the main key colour, as if they are co-ordinates in 3D space, and uses the distance and direction to calculate if the pixel is transparent or not.
