Appreciate the input. I thought several plugins now take advantage of of GPU and was anticipating quicker renders.

There are now a fairly good amount of effects in CC2018 that are GPU-accelerated, such as transforms and motion blur, but fewer and fewer if you're on older versions. Generally though, AE development is heading towards putting more load on GPU instead of multi-threading, and personal feelings aside, I think it's generally a good thing, and your upgrade was worthwhile.
