Yeah, that’s what I’ve always done too.  Glad it’s not just me.  And the “Open script editor” has never worked for me, either...

I never use any of those features. I've gotten in the habit of using alert() and $.writeln() for temp feedback in ESTK.

I’ve had a look around online and there’s not a lot of documentation specific to After Effects.  There are features listed in the documentation that I can’t get to work, such as showing the values of variables at specific times, and so on.

Are there any tutorials/ documents out there that specifically demonstrate the best way to use the ESTK with After Effects?
