I’ve been freelancing for 20+ years, and 99% of my work has come from word of mouth, but I have slack times as do most freelancers. I’m on LinkedIn so that I can connect with people who buy services like mine when I need to drum up some work. So far, I’ve gotten replies like, “Thanks for reaching out. We don’t have anything now, but we’ll keep you in mind.” I haven’t heard back from anybody, but think that may be a matter of timing. “Out of sight; out of mind." Had I contacted people at the instant they had work, I might have benefitted from the contact.
Hey, it’s free. So, why not take a few minutes to create a profile and make some connections.
As for the invitations and reminders, I create a Folder and a Rule in my Mac Mail app that directs all the LinkedIn messages there, which lets me prioritize when I look at them. I have custom folders for my clients, friends, and family, and find it a useful feature. I have a custom sound for my clients, too. So, I can tell even before I look at my Mail app whether that sound requires immediate attention.

I’ve never thought much about it and so much work comes via word-or-mouth or existing contacts, I’ve never really had to. And all these invitations and reminders get a bit annoying… Is it something you think is important?
