Thanks for the responses guys. I’ve noticed it for at least 6 months or so. I’ve been using AE for over 20 years so I’m pretty well versed with trouble shooting slow projects but this feels different in term of the sluggishness. I’m guessing the error message isn't related to the speed issues but I had hoped it was just due to the timing.

I doubt it has anything to do with rendering on your MacPro, unless perhaps you’re using fonts in the typekit.  I could be wrong.  Your rendering woes could be project or footage item related, which you should be able to suss by rendering with different projects and footage items.  To see if it’s network related, shut off your network settings, and see if that helps.
