The Create Nulls from Points (CNP) feature is a script. Upon installation of AE 15+, you'll find it in the ScriptUIPanels folder. The Trace Path option is the specific feature you have alluded to. Jakob Wagner has taken the original AE Script and added additional features; the most invaluable of which is the creation of handles for the points, after running the other two features of CNP. Jakob's tutorial - https://youtu.be/DHLiE5xh13s One thing to note when you run the Trace Path feature is that an Effect is applied to a newly created Null. The effect includes a Slider and a checkbox that toggles looping. There is a bug (with AE's original rendition of CNP - haven't tested for the bug with Jakob's rendition) when copying and pasting Nulls created via CNP. After pasting, the Nulls lose their layer references, which is set in each Null's ECP. So, you'll need to manually relink each Null to their respective point, along the path.
