In Character Animator, open the project with the ducks that shoot out of the cannon. I forget the name of it, but it’s the last of the tutorial projects.
It’s sounding like you may need to be using Cinema 4D for this.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. Out of curiosity I fired up Character Animator for the first time, but I didn’t find it quick or easy to set up particles. I’ve never used it before so it’s all new to me, but from looking online I think the resolution for both CA and Newton is too low for what I’m looking for. And the look I’m interested in is definitely 3D displacement including the Z axis. But it’s a great tip for future mograph applications where I’m wanting to animate text or images using physics. I’ve had fun playing with Newton in the past but don’t own it, and it’s always preferable to look for solutions that don’t involve buying something new.
I left some tests running overnight using Re:Map to unwrap the 3D object, comp 2D particles made using particular on top, then re-wrapping to 3D. This has worked quite well and is probably good enough for what I’m doing.
While I seem to have found a solution using a 2D fudge, I’m still interested to hear from someone with knowledge of other particle systems. Are xParticles and n Particles capable of having particles slide over the surface of a 3D model? Or if I’m looking for something closer to a fluid sim (liquid pouring over an object), is RealFlow the way to go?
Might sound crazy but look at character animator. It has particle emitters as well as physics that allow particles to bounce off of other layers (and each other). Take a look at Newton.
Cheers, Rachel
I’m working on a project where I’d like to have particles falling down and bounce/slide off an obj - think of rain falling down and then running off an object, eg a car or an umbrella. I’m not sure there’s a solution to do this in AE, but any suggestions? Both Particular and Stardust can emit from an obj, but particles can’t bounce or slide off of one. I think I can fudge the old foam effect with a flow map to get about 50% of the way there, but am looking for something better. I’m also looking at a fudge using Re:Map and a UV pass of the object. This may work, but again looking for options. I don’t know much about platforms outside of AE, but if I wanted to look elsewhere can anyone suggest a solution. Am I looking for x particle in cinema, or something in maya, etc? Cheers, -Chris +---End of message---+ To unsubscribe send any message to < ae-list-off@media-motion.tv>
