My understanding is that 100 nits is the definition for sRGB, so the calibrator is just wanting to match the sRGB spec.  Sure the monitor can go way brighter but the colours they are displaying are then outside of the sRGB gamut.  Happy to be corrected if that’s wrong.

Personally, I find 100 nits about right and I find monitors that are too bright contribute to eye strain and headaches.
