I’ve recently had a lot of issues when freelancing onsite with networked storage, even theoretically fast SANs etc. had to bring a project locally, but it was more for playback than saving. Premiere too. That sounds outside of the range of normality though for a decent network setup. What format are the files? MXF can cause some issues too, I usually transcode those to DPX or EXR for AE I haven’t gotten as far as tracking or anything. I’m just trying to start…  So far I have a project that has less than 100 clips in it, and it takes 30+ minutes to open and save. We have a beefy network infrastructure. Connections are 10 gig. It’s not a network optimised for editing, but that’s not what I’m doing. There’s something wrong somewhere. There are less than 100 clips to import, 1/2 hour is about 1800 seconds. So basically AE is taking roughly 18 - 20 seconds to check each clip - every time the project is opened or saved. This is not even playback. I’m just trying to import. And I checked - all the clips are 2K ProRes quicktimes. Not even that heavy. Obviously I have tried things like purging the cache, restarting, and so on.
I had a quick word with our IT guy and one thing he said to check is if the file path is over 256 characters long. Apparently that can cause wierd issues with our setup - could be something that is unique to our server etc. It’s the sort of tip I was looking for and I hope that’s it.
If I find a solution or can identify a problem then I’ll let you know.
I think you answered your own question. How fast is the network? Gigabit or 10gig? How big is the project file itself, if you’re saving the AE proj locally. May need to bring it local. Or is there a lot of data being stored in the project itself? Tracking? Warp stabilizer? Rotobrush? I’ve imported a Premiere project into After Effects, it’s 1 minute duration at 4K. It took over 30 minutes to bring the project in, I guess it was relinking all the clips. Problem is that it hasn’t gotten any faster. Each save takes just as long. Yes it’s 4K but there’s not that many clips… both Premiere and AE are running the latest versions.
Currently it’s unworkable. I’m wondering if anyone else has had similar issues? It’s not like I’m doing anything unusual. I’ve even removed all unused footage, reduced to project down to a bare minimum and it’s still taking forever to open and save. Currently the project is unworkable.
The footage is on a network drive (not unusual either) and I’m going to guess that if I copy everything locally it will probably work OK. If it doesn’t then I’m in trouble.
But are there any other tips or things I’m overlooking to make this less painful?
