| Yes, it’s a composition setting.
This is actually more important than it might seem, because if you render out anything with a transparent/ semi-transparent background then After Effects will pre-multiply the alpha with the composition background colour. Discovering this was the motivation for posting a refresher course on alpha channels:

Unless I’m missing the issue, I’d say your background color in your "Composition Settings” is set to white, and you just need to set it back to black.
Hello all.
I don't why, but this is bugging the crap out of me. You know when you mask something out you have the option to show the transparent background (checkerboard) or turn it off and it's usually black. For some reason mine has recently been showing as white and I don' know what the hell I accidentally clicked.
Any idea how to get it back to black?
