Hi Jim

If the font shows up in photoshop you can type the text in PS and copy paste it to AE.
The font will be copied too but it will show up as a blank in the font dropdown menu in AE, so you can't change it from within AE but it will render fine as long as you don't change font.

Annoying AE bug, but it can be worked around for now if you know how.

I downloaded a demo of TransType4 and converted the font to OTF, and now it’s showing up in Ae.  So, perhaps the two are related.  Weird, since Adobe spawned PostScript.

I also noticed that some fonts don’t show up in Ae right after I activate them in FXP as they used to.  I have to quit Ae and relaunch, just like in Ae version 8 with OS9.  I guess I’m lucky I don’t have to reboot, too.

there is a bug in the new font dropdown menu in the newer AE version that wont show some fonts, even if they work fine in other apps like Photoshop... and the older AE with the old font dropdown menu.
