They could have done it sooner or later, but they had to do it. We’re lucky to have the support at the application level that we do. Could you imagine never being able to open .mov files compressed with the Animation CODEC ever again? If you’re running macOS 10.6 to 10.12 (maybe as high as 10.13) and using CS6 to CC 2017, you should be good to use QuickTime CODECs as you always have. Going forward, we’ll need to either keep an older boot drive/machine around or find a new workflow 32-bit QuickTime CODECs that are not supported at the application level. There are already votes for supporting Photo-JPEG on the Adobe user-voice pages (https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911311-after-effects/suggestions/33841261-photojpeg-quicktime-support).
