Per cases, I'm not a gamer and have installed a built approx. 50 machines over last 10 years.

Specific features

 1. I think quiet is a big deal for desktop, so look for sound dampening that still offers good airflow. Fractal Design's mid and top line cases are excellent for this as are a number of others. Most case reviews online measure noise and temps.

2. Top mounted USB/audio etc. ports I find work better than front mounted but some personal preference. I also like a nice flat are to set USB hubs, external drives on that does not block top fans.  If you get a lot of bare drives, a drive dock can be useful as well just make sure you have a SATA port free to run to it.

3. Quality fans included for reliability and quiet performance

4. Easy to build with - clear instructions, well labeled parts, flexible drive bays and clean, easy to route cable design.

5. Optical bay drive. I still burn DVDs and Blurays and internal drives are cheaper, faster and more reliable than internal.

Tempered glass is just to show off you internal builds and parts with the RGB lighting frenzy that is all the range. I have one case with it that I got a deal on and don’t find it that useful.

In general avoid the low end and avoid high end unless you have special needs (I have a Cosmos II case for my one workstation that need 12 internal drives). Don’t get one with a PSU bundled and not a fan of aluminum cases like Lian Li - owned several and not fun to build with or own long term.

Subject: [AE] Cases for windows machine

Hi all,

I’m going to put together a simple windows machine and thought I’d ask peoples opinions on cases.  All other parts of a computer can be chosen on their technical merits but I’m a bit stumped when it comes to choosing a case.  Lots of cases seem to be aimed at gamers, while honestly I don’t care about LEDs and how many colours it comes in.
I’m wondering if there are specific features I should look for that are more relevant to video professionals… things like port placements and so on.  Why the fuss over tempered glass panels?  If the point of a glass panel is so you can see the LEDs on the motherboard then I wouldn’t bother, unless there’s more to it than that?
The online retailer I use has over 300 cases to choose from ranging from $49 to over $800, and unlike RAM / CPU / GPU I have no idea what the extra money is bringing in.

I haven’t built a windows machine for over 10 years so any insight is welcome.

-Chris

FWIW I’m looking at an ATX case, only 1 graphics card.
