Subject: Best plugin to normalise z depths

Hi all,

I’m currently working on a project where frames are supplied as multichannel exrs.  I’m working in 32bit float, linear space.  The z-depth pass has raw values in it which are huge, I am normalising it in a precomp so I can see it, and tint it for fog/atmos effects.  Currently I’m using the exposure effect to bring the values down into visible range, but as the exposure plugin has a limit of 10 stops sometimes I’m having to use 2 copies.  Once I can see the image I use the levels effect to fine tune the blacks / whites.

I’m wondering if there’s a better tool.  I know AE is a bit lacking when it comes to 32 bit support, so is there a better way to bring these massive numbers down into a 0-1 range?  Or is exposure / levels the best we’ve got to work with?

-Chris

PS. It’s not an option to change the way the z pass is rendered in 3D.
