Well chalk this up as a weird one, but now the exposure plugin is giving me +/- 100 stops, which is much better. Don’t know where the 10 stop limit came from? Anyway the combination of exposure & levels is doing what I need to do, it’s just an eyeball thing anyway, but if there is a better way to do it then I’d still like to know.

The z-depth pass has raw values in it which are huge, I am normalising it in a precomp so I can see it, and tint it for fog/atmos effects. Currently I’m using the exposure effect to bring the values down into visible range, but as the exposure plugin has a limit of 10 stops sometimes I’m having to use 2 copies. Once I can see the image I use the levels effect to fine tune the blacks / whites.
