These are addressable LED pixel strings arranged in a 3d grid. 

There are lots of ways to get data to the pixels to give you the 3d effect.

Usually they are very low rez and the z depth is extracted in slices.

Here is another example 


I have done 2d versions of this using scripts to export AE data into RGB pixel data and sending that to LED pixels via an ethernet attached controller.
