I’ve been having good luck although use it much more in Resolve than AE with the Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K PCIe (where as returned several Decklink and AJA HDMI units, both USB, internal and Thunderbolt. For $200, it’s
a steal.
I’m going out HDMI 2.0 to a Sony 4K HDR projector and Resolve has been solid (as you might expect).
But I have issues with Realtime playback in AE in without external monitor going anyway. I think the fragility of that is the real issue, not external monitor. Unless something has fundamentally changed in AE, external monitor performance
is ALWAYS going to be less than non-external, so unless you’ve got really solid, plenty of overhead RT playback already, external monitor is going to knock it down.
I’ve not tested how much in the current AE setup but this is of interest to me too – but I’m got all my machines churning on other things for next few days for testing.

Subject: [AE] Video Monitor
It's been a while since I tried a broadcast monitor for AE previews. I'm looking at a Decklink mini Monitor 4K so I can use SDI to get to a Flanders monitor I have here. In the past, I always had issues getting AE to play back realtime
when an external monitor was connected. It felt as if the external monitor was a huge strain on the system. I thought I'd get a consensus before I use hard earned budget dollars.
