Photogrammetry of a car has to be shot very spec= ifically. Even then there is a massive amount of cleanup involved to remove= noise in the scan, then you have to deal with UV texturing and such. Refle= ctive smooth surfaces like cars do not solve in photogrammetry. Think about= 3D tracking a shiny car. All of the specular hits and reflections confuse = the software and it has no clue what's what.

If you have a ton o= f photos of the car, and the shot is only a pan, I would find the best phot= o that matches your shot angle, and do some basic modeling in 3D. Similar t= o this technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DC7vLZ0ddfSI

If yo= u really need a full proper working 3D model, then you will either have to = find one online that has been built already, or hire a 3D modeler to proper= ly build it for you.

Hi all,

I’m doing s= ome work on a short film with very limited resources, and so am trying to w= ork out how to do some FX with effectively 0 budget.

There’s o= ne shot where the director would like to add a car driving past on a road. = There’s a basic background plate but no option to shoot the car for = real, the car would have to be a 3D model of the specific car used earlier = in the shoot, but which is no longer available.

The specific car was= extensively photographed so I’m wondering if it would be feasible to= get a simple 3D model made that would be good enough for a 60 frame pannin= g shot. I’= ;ve never done it. I’m not a 3D artist. Just wondering if anyone wh= o has tried building a 3D model from photos can share some advice so I know= if it’s even an option. I see it as a possible learning exercise, e= ven to potentially animate the car in the lite C4D that comes with AE.
