Chris,

Photogrammetry of a car has to be shot very specifically. Even then there is a massive amount of cleanup involved to remove noise in the scan, then you have to deal with UV texturing and such. Reflective smooth surfaces like cars do not solve in photogrammetry. Think about 3D tracking a shiny car. All of the specular hits and reflections confuse the software and it has no clue what's what.

If you have a ton of photos of the car, and the shot is only a pan, I would find the best photo that matches your shot angle, and do some basic modeling in 3D. Similar to this technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7vLZ0ddfSI

If you really need a full proper working 3D model, then you will either have to find one online that has been built already, or hire a 3D modeler to properly build it for you.

Hi all,

I’m doing some work on a short film with very limited resources, and so am trying to work out how to do some FX with effectively 0 budget.

There’s one shot where the director would like to add a car driving past on a road. There’s a basic background plate but no option to shoot the car for real, the car would have to be a 3D model of the specific car used earlier in the shoot, but which is no longer available.

The specific car was extensively photographed so I’m wondering if it would be feasible to get a simple 3D model made that would be good enough for a 60 frame panning shot. There are lots of high-res photos from all angles, I think the guy who took them intended to build a model via photogrammetry.

I’ve never done it. I’m not a 3D artist. Just wondering if anyone who has tried building a 3D model from photos can share some advice so I know if it’s even an option. I see it as a possible learning exercise, even to potentially animate the car in the lite C4D that comes with AE.

Thanks in advance!
