Can you play with warping the footage before it gets transformed to the tiny planet projection?  Stretch it out non uniformly so the horizon takes up more real estate -- maybe using Mesh Warp?  I remember doing something like that in Nuke when I was making my own tiny planet-maker setup for my Gear 360 camera.

Or perhaps Optics Compensation on the resultant image.
