Thanks for the info everyone. That article from Puget was good. It confirmed a lot of things I had assumed or determined in my usage of things. I'll only get extra cards for the machines rendering with Redshift.

My experience, the only graphics use case right now that benefits from multple GPUs is non-realtime rendering. In realtime, you have to worry about added latency from SLI, and also the drop to 8x speed if you have a Z-series motherboard. Neither of these is an issue with non-realtime renderering.

For that, you're mainly looking at just two specs: sum of all your cards' cores = rendering speed, and max VRAM on the smallest card = scene complexity.

And here’s some recommendations from PugetSystems, they really do put in the time and do some great research

I'm budgeting for next year. Looking to add a second GPU in the artist machines. I know we will get a palpable benefit in our 3D rendering with Redshift, but will AE have any gains with additional GPU power?  I know they have been adding more and more GPU acceleration to AE with each release, but wasn't sure if one card was able handle it or does 2 cards help?

Thanks for any input.
