Yeah, on the biggest projects for the film (the ones that took 2 days to open) we disable the prefs in AE to check any footage at all for changes. Turn that off if you have files on network or much better yet, get all that stuff local.

Is the hang when you switch off of AE or back to it? Or both?

I think when you re-activate AE it takes the opportunity to check its footage to see if anything changed. On a network drive that would be slower.
