Yeah, on the biggest projects for the film (the ones that took 2 days to open) we disable the prefs in AE to check any footage at all for changes. Turn that off if you have files on network or much better yet, get all that stuff local.
Making everything local is not always logical/practical. We're working off a 77 TB server with 30 machines. Should we get each machine its own 70 TB array?
While this AE hang thing is annoying and should be addressed, my guess is trying to synch up local storage on a whole bunch of machines would be even more annoying.
That said, with our NFS network setup the Macs cruise along but the Windows machines are much slower to access files on the network. We pretty much only use AE on Mac for this reason. Switching to SMB might fix Windows, but then maybe the Macs will be slow? We're contemplating it.
