I always find threads like this immensely informative. I didn't realize the option existed for H.264 having a lossless version even though using FFMPEG at a setting of -17 or -18 is visually lossless (not technically) according to that Wiki page posted.
I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it but the guys over at Greyscalegorilla did a very interesting test of various sequential file formats and playback/loading speed. Not sure if it adds any help to the cause here, just a little caffeine based memory infusion.
