I frequently need to do this with artwork supplied by clients, and the method that I use, in case it's easier, is to File -> Place the PDF into a new Illustrator file, then use the Object -> Flatten Transparency command, with the "Convert all text to outlines" option selected.
Cheers, Phil

I’m using Adobe Pro DC (Mac) and the menus are different, but all the options mentioned in your linked article are there, and it works like a charm!
Thanks so much, Robert!

Hi Curtis, I had this problem a few years back. It can be done in Acrobat. Just tried searching for the solution I found back then. I think this is it.
I open the PDFs in Illustrator which look fine in Acrobat, but a bunch of the fonts change I suppose because I don’t have the right fonts installed. Does anybody know of a utility that will convert the fonts to outlines before I open them in Illustrator? Or, maybe there’s a trick to get them to open as outlines in Illustrator? I opened one in Acrobat, and exported the pages as EPS, but the fonts are still fonts when I open those exported EPS in Ai. I understand I can buy the font, and ID it on whatthefont, but just wondering if there’s a way to do this another way.
