Jim, and others who may not be aware - I've got some bad news.

The writing has been on the wall for many years. I'm sure everyone on the list is tired of hearing me shout that pros need to move on from Apple desktops for professional work. They are a cellphone and tablet company.

Here are the major points of why I urge folks still on Mac to move onto PCs soon:

- Jim, you are stuck on whatever OS version you have that still supports CUDA / GTX Titan X, forever

- Apple has officially killed all nVidia CUDA support from Mojave onwards. They are essentially sworn enemies. Each company blames the other for lack of support. But Apple controls drivers and will not ever support CUDA / nVidia devices (even eGPUs) going forward. AMD only from now on. (or proprietary cards to come)

- OpenCL support on Apple is dead. In general, OpenCL development is EOL. it's a crippled, buggy platform. Good riddance.

- OpenGL support on Apple is ending (!!!). They are going metal-only. This is a going to be a huge clusterfuck. Devs will need metal-only versions of apps going forward. Only the largest devs will be able to support / afford this. Many of our "pro" apps will not be compatible

- Apple is also developing their own CPU architecture. This makes dropping openGL support seem small by comparison. Remember the transition from powerPC to intel? Going to be a disaster for any studios still on Macs.

- Apple is dropping all "legacy" codec support. This includes DNxHD, DNxHR, Cineform, and many other extremely current and relevant codecs.

That may be shared by Nvidia, as my Titan X is a flashed card not offered by Nvidia directly, but rather a third party:

This may have changed since I purchased my card.  Hard to keep up.

Nvidia does offer drivers for this tech for OSX, though, including CUDA.

Is CUDA even supported on Mac hardware going forward? Apple seems to have an institutional hatred for Nvidia, unfortunately.

I’ve been working on a maxed out 2012 MacPro5,1, but have found significant gains in Pr by upgrading my GPU to the biggest and baddest, the Titan X.  Most of my work is in Pr, and a CUDA GPU makes a big difference.

I wonder how much, if anything is gained by rendering DL-ed Ae Comps in Pr, but my guess is “not much, if any.” That’s due to the fact that Adobe vaunts CUDA for rendering CUDA accelerated effects and H.264 export, and not everything.

On my wish list is that Adobe and all third-party vendors would make their effects CUDA hardware accelerated.  And, any other GPU vendor, FTM.  I’ve read that Open CL and Metal are still works in progress in OSX.  True?
