Until you hear from somebody to answer your specific question about image sequences, whenever I use Render Garden, no matter how many threads I choose - I usually choose between 6 & 12, I’ve noticed that it maxes out all my cores.  I use iStatMenus for OSX, and have CPU status icons in my menu bar.  I have a MacPro5,1, with six cores, 24 threads.  I’m probably a pretty light user of the product, and don’t fiddle with the preferences much.
