but i'm not convinced it's a solution for your problem.

there is a precomp to layer duration script  that could be tweaked, perhaps

why not use time remapping?

with something in an expresssion like" value+shift value" and a global controller? something like time-1

In apps that don't properly support metadata/timecode, one idea is to write the timecode as the frame number.  You get obscene numbers, like your comp will start on frame 1841992.  But then when you write out more padding on either side, you just render those frames, add them in, and change the starting frame of your comp.  Seems like all would remain intact.

I'm pretty sure Resolve supports that - although admittedly it's been a while since I've had to do it.

Unless my logic is off...

Subject: [AE] Adding handles to image sequences w/o losing existing timing?

I'm in the middle of a nightmare project that I'm supposed to be doing VFX comps for BEFORE the edit is actually locked.

I transcoded the current R3D selects to DPX sequences (using DaVinci Resolve w/24 frames of handles), so I dont have to work with the original R3D files in AE. My usual workflow is to create "source clip comps", by using the "New Comp from Selection" feature on the selected, imported DPX sequences. I then use this precomp as the actual "footage" that I work with, rather than dragging the actual clip itself directly into my comps.

It appears that AE does not use embedded media timecode to reference discrete frames, so if I add more handles to the originally imported DPX sequence, the timing of the footage gets borked because it seems AE is just referencing frames by raw framecount, starting from the physical start of the media.

In my ideal world, I would like to be able to add handles to an image sequence, and then have AE automatically detect this and allow me to pull out more frames on each side of the clip, without disturbing the original timing of the clip, wherever its being used in my comps.

Any tips to workaround this issue?
