| Ah dammit. Could have sworn an art director at a clients I worked with last year showed me this. We were working with massive AI files at the time. Living a lie this whole time ;)
Well overlord looks great, I’m a big fan of rubber hose too. But this is a personal project so no budget this time around. Next time I have job that needs it I know where to go
Quite honestly why adobe hasn’t implemented this already . It’s not like they don’t own both codebase. Gah just winds me up!-A
You’re smoking the wishful thinking pipe Adam. ;-) But I’d say Plus 10000 for overlord - it makes working with ai and ae good again.
I used to do it by copying all ai the text to a new file (select>objects>text then command F) and exporting that as a PSD with editable text, then importing that psd to ae and then converting those to editable. Works great. But tedious.
For one offs, you can copy text in ai and paste into ae and it will retain all formatting etc. just not position.
But Overlord just handles it all the way it’s supposed to. Just push to ae and DONE!
Adobe is light years behind on all this. It’s embarrassing.
Seriously. Am I smoking the crazy pipe. I could have sworn I’ve done this before. I have to go check now. Maybe I just wishfully dreamed it.

Moving Images. For Business That has never been possible with ai files in my recollection. Only PSD.
I ended up in the same situation as you a couple weeks ago, with client provided storyboard layouts all done in Illustrator. Ended up purchasing Overlord. From the same dev as Rubber Hose. Did the trick for me. It's got some wonky things that don't quite work as a "magic button" solution. But it does handle the text exactly as I needed. It's an extension instead of a plugin. So it has a bit of a different install process.
///Greg Balint //Art Director / Motion Graphics Designer /321.514.4839 delRAZOR.com/Okay it seems something that was super easy is now not. I’ve used this feature a bazillion times in CC14 but it’s not available in CC18
I have an illustrator file with all text in the file spread out over 274 layers (good god adobe why on earth are we still playing this stupid game in 2019, why is it so hard to implement comp import behavior the same as photoshop (poundHeadOnWall() )
When the AI is imported into AE the function to Convert to Editable Text is grayed out.
What’s the trick?
