| I’ve got too much invested in software to switch to Windows. I looked at switching a few years ago, but my hangup is that my LTO archiving app (BRU PE) is Mac only, and I have tapes going back 10 years or so that I still need to access every now and then.
I realize their track record for new Apple hardware isn’t great. Nor has a 10.x.0 of OSX ever been perfect. I’m looking at retirement in 5 years or so, so this would be my last workstation in all likelihood.
Good to know about the GPUs not being upgradable, if that’s true. Although, that seems odd, since is has two double wide PCIe slots. You don’t think any third party cards will work in it? Ever?
Not in a million years, I think it’s a dumb waste of money. You could build a much faster PC for less. Don’t want to rehash tired mac vs pc BS though. Also, even if I were getting one, say if someone bought us one, I’d still wait at least 6 months to see how any major design flaws suss out. I’ve been to studios where 5 out of 10 Mac pro trashcans were in the shop at any one time for various issues. Ditto the iMac Pro with heat and throttling issues. Their track record on new Mac hardware fresh out the gate is not good.
Also you won’t be able to add your own GPUs since they’re custom jobs made by Apple.
My 2c Who’s getting one?
I’m thinking about ordering a base model with all the cores I can get for $10K, and then adding my own RAM and GPU later, at half the cost.
Also, thinking about ordering through a VAR, so I can get billed in this tax year, and take delivery in Jan. Apple doesn’t charge your card until the product ships.
Anybody else? See anything wrong with my plan?
