I'm really curious in the answer to this question as I honestly can't think of a rational reason for anyone to buy a model below there top end. The chassis and mobo is so overengineered, it's a supercar, that unless you put a supercar engine in it and it's around $15k, you're just literally throwing money away.

Supercar's are bought by people to burn money for fun, status, pride of ownership - nothing that really falls into the why to buy a computer discussion.

And because there is only one chassis option but various engines, here, it gets downright weird i.e. the $6000 base model that many computers (including other Apple models) can smoke in a benchmark test.

> I’m thinking about ordering a base model with all the cores I can get for $10K, and then adding my own RAM and GPU later, at half the cost.

And to spend $10K and not be getting the fastest possible machine just does not seem rational especially because no nVidia options at all as they've stopped driver development completely for MacOS (https://hub.packtpub.com/nvidia-announces-cuda-10-2-will-be-the-last-release-to-support-macos/)

Here's to hoping the increase the options, reduce the prices and introduce a smaller, mid-range chassis soon so a $3 to $5k model exists that is actually fast.

Best,

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

Who’s getting one?

I’m thinking about ordering a base model with all the cores I can get for $10K, and then adding my own RAM and GPU later, at half the cost.

Also, thinking about ordering through a VAR, so I can get billed in this tax year, and take delivery in Jan.  Apple doesn’t charge your card until the product ships.

Anybody else?  See anything wrong with my plan?
