| Premiere has a useful time-code effect if that’s what you need. It can display sequence time or the clip source time-code. I use it a lot for interviews where my clients are picking takes, and sending me ins and outs to use in edits.
I figure if you have Ae, you probably have Premiere, too, right?
Unfortunately for Adobe, my first step for data burn-in is to launch Resolve, which has a whole panel devoted to the subject with tons of useful options and no point size limits that I’ve run into, that I can apply to a ton of different comps in a single action. Unfortunately for BMD, Resolve is a nightmare for dealing with mixed frame rates and very large, arbitrarily-sized comps. Unfortunately for Adobe, the 2GB Comp size limit and Resolve’s secondary selection tools… And on and on.But, these days I’m working in Resolve and elsewhere so much that I can’t remember where all the fool scripts are and what their names are. Nor do I want to remember. The job of a GUI is to guide me toward best practices; hI shouldn’t NEED to remember. Having to logically deconstruct the situation and build up a solution brick by brick is a nodal/CL approach that if I was generally disposed to, I would be long ago off to Nuke and Fusion land without looking back.Tim SassoonSFDVenice, CAOn Dec 12, 2019, at 11:15 AM, David Torno <AE-List@media-motion.tv> wrote:
Lol, Steve, literally this particular basic expression (literally typing 14 characters) is setup to be the same step as adding an fx plugin. One click and drag.
Search “Frame Number” in the stock Animation Presets.
If people want bells and whistles, then yes there are more steps. The point being is that solutions do exist, and no they really are not complicated, just confusing if you refuse to learn some simple things, but I get that some people just want an easy button. Which quite frankly is possible too if you use ExtendScript. It can be a button click.
The alternative is to keep filing a feature request and hope Adobe gets enough requests for it to do something about it. Until then the vast pool of 3rd party developers fill that gap and put a lot of developing effort into making useful tools. We all know time is money, so those tools are not always going to be free. I’ve given free solutions (not only here but over the past 10 years) and Lloyd has provided fancier paid solutions (for nearly the same amount of time). Many options exist to fix this frame counter burnin problem currently. If people don’t like any of them, then I guess you are stuck....by choice.

No need for precomps. Add text layer, add expression to source text property, and choose timeToFrames from preset arrow drop down.
Done.
You can use any font in AE now and size.

Complaint and FR - The Numbers effect type size is limited to 128pt. I’m putting the request here, since I was bounced from the AE beta list a years ago.
With today’s frame sizes that’s often absurd SMALL, and one has to jump through precomp hoops to scale it big enough to be useful; current project 400%. How about 999 points maximum? That might keep us for a few years.
