You could do something similar with Trapcode Form.  Maybe better because you can arrange the particles in a 3D grid of particles.

You might want to downscale your covers to around 100 x 100 or smaller for your Sprite Precomp.  Large particles in Form and Particular can cause issues.

Hey Dale,

You can definitely do this with particular (and that's how I would do it)

to set up, you would

put all your album covers in a precomp.

Make them all 1 frame long.

Select them all, right click and choose keyframe assistant->sequence layers (make sure overlap is NOT checked)

make the precomp length so that it ends after the last frame of album covers (so there is never any blank in the precomp)

put the precomp in your main comp and turn the eyeball off so you dont see it)

in particular for particle type choose sprite (stupid name)

just below particle type is texture.  twirl that down and for layer select your precomp layer, and time sampling choose random still frame.

That should do it (and way easier than doing it by hand), now you just need to play with the emitter and particle systems to make them behave the way you want.

Good luck!

Thanks!  I've give that a try.

I had a thought a minute ago.  I have Trapcode Particular 2.  Is it possible to assign my own media (the hundred or so album covers) to behave as if they were particles?

Hi Dale,

yes, moving the camera makes sense. To place the layers in space randomly, the wiggle expression can be very helpful. If you set the frequency to 0, they won’t move.

wiggle(0,500)

for example, will place all layers up to 500px away from their original position (in each dimension) and keep them on that random position. So if they initially all have the same position, after applying the expression they form a ’swarm’ around that position after applying the expression.

If you want to control their placement in X,Y, and Z independently, you could use the separate Wiggle 3D iExpression, for example.

Hi all.  I want to do an animation whereby the camera appears to fly into a 'swarm' of record album covers  (I have jpegs of them in a folder).  I'm guessing that it would be more efficient to animate just the camera and not the albums... correct?  If anyone has any short cut suggestions... or know of a template or plug-in for 'camera flying through a swarm of artwork' type effect, please let me know.

Thanks,
